For someone who struggles with chronic migraines, the most mundane everyday task, like getting out of bed, can feel unthinkable, let alone anything extra!
But everyone needs something besides mere survival to do to add personal satisfaction and fulfillment to their life. It’s especially important for those who suffer from chronic illnesses to find a hobby that brings them joy.
I personally don’t know what I would do without my knitting needles and yarn on the flare days that make it difficult for me to get out of bed or the countless hours spent in a doctor’s waiting room!
An ideal hobby for someone who has chronic migraines is flexible, stress free and most importantly makes you happy!
I’ve gathered up a list of 7 hobby ideas that would be perfect for someone with migraines. I hope you find one that interests you!
1. Crochet
Learning how to crochet can be a very rewarding hobby. All you need to start is a ball of yarn and a crochet hook and the possibilities are endless! There’s something magical about turning a string of yarn into a scarf, blanket, dishcloth or even stuffed animal that would make a special gift for someone you love!
2. Reading
I love reading to get out of my own head and take my mind off of my troubles. A good book is inspirational and gives you new things to think about. My only issue is I run out of reading material so fast! When I get into a book I just can’t put it down until I finish it. And then I get sad because I finished it. It’s a vicious cycle.
3. Home Decor
Decorating your space is a great way to feel more comfortable and uplifted . If you suffer from chronic migraines, you probably spend a lot of time at home, so your space needs to feel especially comfortable for you. Experimenting wit home decor is a great way to do that while giving you a creative outlet. Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive and can be as simple as a new hand towel for your bathroom or a new rug for your bedroom. Just choose things that make you happy!
4. Houseplants
Caring for houseplants is such a rewarding hobby! It’s so exciting to see a plant that you’ve lovingly tended to thriving and putting out new leaves. There are so many different varieties of plants to choose from like Pothos, Spider Plants, African Violets, Monsteras and Dieffenbachia so you’ll never get bored. Houseplants are such a good hobby for people with migraines as they help purify the air and bring life and cheerfulness to your home.
5. Knitting
As I mentioned above, knitting is one of my favorite ways to keep busy while waiting at a doctors appointment or snuggled under a blanket on days I feel particularly bad. It’s also easy to throw in your bag and take anywhere with you which is a big plus. Hand knitted creations are a great gift idea and you can even donate your knitted items to charity, such as blankets to animal shelters!
6. Baking
Learning how to make homemade treats is fun and delicious! You can find endless recipes online for cookies, bars, cakes and pies. And if you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies you can find recipes tailored to your needs instead of spending tons of money for prepackaged snacks.
7. Photography
I find myself always on the lookout for hints to take pictures of. It’s helps me to look for beauty in things I normally wouldn’t notice like a bird sitting my in a bush outside my window or my cat sleeping in a funny position. You don’t need anything’s fancy or expensive for this hobby, I just use my phone. Start taking notice of things that bring you joy and take pictures of it!
Thanks for reading!!!!
